Bible Texts: Isaiah 9:2-7, Luke 2:1-14, John 8:12, Matthew 5:14

Memory Verses:

Isaiah 9:2 NRSV          “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.”

John 8:12 NRSV         “I am the light of the world. ! ! ! Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, ! ! ! but will have the light of life.”

Matthew 5:14 NRSV   “You are the light of the world.”

Goals and Objectives:
At the end of the rotation, students will be able to:

  • Find the Bible texts in Isaiah, Matthew, Luke, and John.
  • Define four vocabulary words:
    1) Messiah - savior, anointed one
    2) Prophecy - truth telling, a profit speaking the Word of God to remind us of ! our faith or to get our attention.
    3) Prophet - speaking the truth, the word of God, Isaiah and John were prophets
    4) Covenant - contract or promise
  • Make connections with the Old Testament that lead up to the birth of Christ: Know that Jesus? birth is the fulfillment of God?s covenant with His people from long ago, and with us today.
  • Understand the use of the term “light” and how God has passed His “Light” on to us so that we may pass the “light” on to others.

In Isaiah, the hope of the people is that God will give them enlightenment and understanding. God?s Promise to the people is that He will give His people Light. A star appears at His birth.

In John, Jesus says, “I am the light of the world…”

If we keep our eyes on Jesus, He will be our light in the darkness of our world.

God gives us His son, the light of the world. God grants us enlightenment and understanding. Our part of this contract is to be His light in the world; to live lives filled with His light, and to tell others about the Light.

We are the light of Christ when we set an example, hopefully a better example, for the world to see.

The message of God?s birth went from the angels to the shepherds and then from person to person.

Be a good example, you may not even realize that God is using you as a leader for others. This does not mean that we will be perfect, it is why confession of our sins is important. People learn from us too when we ask for forgiveness.

Overview of workshops in this Rotation:

Covenant: Learn about OT connections leading up to Christ?s birth and God?s continuing covenant with us and how we share the light of Christ with others.

Cooking: Make sugar cookie “letters” and learn what the different names for the Messiah tell us about Jesus.

Games: Play “Wheel of Fortune” to explore names of the Messiah, and make “light” connections between our memory verses.

Movie: Watch “Prophets in the Desert” and learn that the prophet Isaiah foretold the coming of the Messiah years before the birth of Jesus, that God?s light is more powerful than any darkness or evil that exists, and that they are light- bearers in this world today and must be the ones to carry the torch to others.

Computers: Use the program, “Fluffy and the Amazing Christ-mas Adventure” to learn what a prophet is, what the prophets said about the coming of a Messiah, what a Messiah is, and discover how we can be prophets of the Messiah at Christmas time.
