Early Childhood Education at Gloria Dei
Helping young children and their families grow in faith through developmentally appropriate events, education, and activities.
Sunday morning classes for infants through Kindergarten begin at 10:00 a.m. We hope that you will find Sunday School a positive and rewarding time of learning for both you and your child(ren). All are welcome!
Little Lambs: Infants through 24 months of age by August 31, 2014
Children this age love things to be consistent. They gain comfort and confidence in knowing what will take place each week. The same Bible lesson is taught for six to eight weeks in a row - the same way each week. Hands-on manipulatives are provided for each child throughout the lesson which involves singing, laughing, and lots of fun.
Another cool aspect of this class is all of the little “tidbits” that one can pick up as a parent on how to share faith with your child(ren). For example, when you hear a bird singing you can touch your child’s ear and say, “Thank you God for (child’s name) ears to hear the bird singing.....” etc. Every unit has great little tips that we as parents don’t necessarily think of on our own, but when we hear them ourselves, it seems so easy and natural! Little things like that can be so powerful. Parents are welcome to stay or to attend an adult class.
Rainbows: Two years old by August 31, 2014
A rainbow is a sign of God’s promise, and like the rainbow, children are signs of God’s promise and love.
Curriculum for this class incorporates many of the concepts and fun things this age group likes to explore. Twos like to move around, copy activities they see parents doing such as driving, cooking, reading, and keeping house. These familiar activities also apply to going to church, praying, and singing. One special thing children do before they leave each time is to look for a rainbow light on their hand to help remind them of God’s love for them. Spread the word and watch for our “Rainbow Children” as they grow in God’s love.
Sunbeams: Three years old by August 31, 2014
There is a huge developmental jump between the ages of two and three. Children become so much more verbal, and have acquired many more skills to help them discover and interact with the world around them and with other children. This class is structured so that one Bible story is introduced every three weeks or so. Each week children will work with the story in a variety of ways.
A sample schedule may include a welcoming activity or song followed by the storytelling. After the story, children are invited to explore a variety of learning centers with activities that are structured to help them further explore the story. The class comes back together at the end for a closing time and prayer.
Godly Play: Four years old (Pre-Kindergarten) by August 31, 2014 and those enrolled in Kindergarten for the 2014-2015 school year
Godly Play really introduces children to worship through play. Children in this group have a longer attention span and are much more independent.
Each class follows the pattern of getting ready (Opening Acclamation), listening and responding to a Bible story (The Word of God), and saying goodbye (Blessing and Dismissal). In a traditional Godly Play classroom, each child chooses whether to respond to the story with art materials or play. Children at Gloria Dei also have a formalized activity to choose from.
Children in Godly Play will be working on memorizing the Lord’s Prayer throughout the year.
